The Browns may not be going to the playoffs this year but for a brief moment last Sunday morning(UK Time) the dream was alive. It was slim, it was probably never really an option but for Browns fans in the UK and across the globe hope springs eternal.
Saturdays game was a bit of a messy one. It was a hard-earned victory. For myself and Browns fans around the UK it was the perfect sign, it was a clear signal that this team is different from years gone by.
The second the Browns elected to go for it on a 4th down late in the game up by 1 point, failed and left a chance for the Broncos to win on a field goal, a collective “Oh Boy” and anticipation of this is how we lose and suffer a heart-breaking loss this week set on. Its something many of us have seen almost countless times down the years. The Browns of old were masters of creating new innovative ways of losing games.
Now the Browns can get to the playoffs this year. But its unlikely. It won’t happen, let’s get that straight now, the Browns need a tie between the Colts and Titans to make it. And to win out. But next year they could well be favourites to win the AFC North.
To figure out how the Browns have had this turnaround, it’s quite easy to recognise and spot. The Browns have drafted incredibly well over the last 2 years. You only have to look at the 5 first rounders they have managed to draft:
- Myles Garrett
- Jabrill Peppers
- David N’Joku
- Baker Mayfield
- Denzel Ward
These 5 players have truly changed the franchise for the better, the Browns have arguably hit on each of them. They suddenly have an identity of defense, aggressive, playing hard every snap. A flashy offense with big play ability on every snap. Baker Mayfield may get all the plaudits, he has plenty to learn yet, but the roster is fighting for the Orange & Brown.
While John Dorsey will get a lot of the plaudits for finding the quarterback its important to note that Sashi Brown, for all his faults accumulated so much draft capital, took so much stick, yet found a way that the Browns could gather 5 first rounders and truly change the face of what has been a down-trodden Franchise.
Cleveland can finish this season with a positive record if they win out. Not only is this plausible and highly possible, it would be the first time it has since 2007. For a team that had 1 win in 2 years before this one, that would be incredible.
The Browns are truly a loveable underdog around the league at the moment and from this moment on, While the Browns are now being called Americas team in some quarters, its quite clear the Browns are truly the UK team of choice. We love an underdog story and what better franchise to choose if your new to the NFL than the Cleveland Browns.
